HISTORY
Divesite:
French for ”Star Fish,” the Etoile DeMer was an 80‐foot long former fishing vessel that was converted and used as an inter-island freighter in her later years. On January 18, 2001, the Etoile DeMer was seized after the US. Customs Service received an anonymous tip of suspicious activity on the ship, which was moored in the Miami River. As part of ”Operation Riverwalk,” agents inspected the freighter and found 186 pounds of cocaine, worth $1.5 million wholesale, in two duffel bags hidden in a false wall between the cargo hold and the engine room. The vessel was seized by the US. government and eventually sunk along with two other Miami River narcotic-smuggling ships, the Brandy Wine and the Miguana, on July 13, 2001. The Etoile De Mer now rests in 135 feet of water off Key Biscayne at U S . Customs Reef, and is a short swim to the west of the Miguana; swimming east off the bow of the Etoile DeMer will take you to the bow of the Miguana. The Tacoma can be found by swimming approximately 500 feet to the northwest.
