The wreck of the freighter n o w known as the Miller Lite was originally launched at Travemfinde, Germany, by builder Schlichting Werft on September 28, 1957, as the Mimi Horn. The 741-ton refrigerated cargo ship, built for Heinrich C. Horn of Hamburg, Germany, was 172feetin length and 28 feet in breadth. Reportedly, the vessel originally operated transporting frozen fish from Spanish fishing trawlers. The Hamburg South American Line eventually acquired the Mimi Horn in 1965, which then later sold it to a Panamanian company in 1968, where upon it was renamed Shirley B. The reefer changed names several more times: in 1970 she operated as both the Aquarius and then Hybur Transport, and in 1983 she w a s renamed Principe Maya. The aged freighter was purchased for $30,000 in 1987 by Broward County and the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo for use as an artificial reef. The former German reefer was renamed Miller Lite in tribute to Fishing Rodeo sponsors Miller Brewing Co. and its local distributor, William Thies and Sons, and scuttled on May 17,1987. Now covered by gorgonian growth, the wreck sits upright in 165 feet of water, with its deck found at a depth of approximately 145 feet. While the front bulkheads of the wheelhouse have collapsed, the rest of the Miller Lite is intact. The engine room is fairly large and easy to navigate.
