HISTORY

The Noula Express was built in 1939 as the Danaland by ScheepswerfT. Van Duijvendijk at Lekkerkerk, Netherlands. Originally owned by Svend Hansen of Kragesand, Denmark, the Danaland was 114 feet in length and displaced 148 tons gross. In 1941, the coaster was sold and renamed Trean. The vessel changed hands again in 1954, whereupon she sailed as Kornmod, which is Danish for ”Harvester.” In 1968, the vessel’s history gets murky, however, at some point the freighter w a s rebuilt, which replaced her simple wooden stern deckhouse for a larger, raised steel structure. Eventually named Noula Express, the vessel w a s appropriated by the artificial reef programs of Palm Beach and Broward Counties after her seizure due to her role in narcotics trafficking. On July 12, 1988, the Noula Express was scuttled off Boca Raton Inlet. The Noula n o w rests in 75feet of water generally oriented north to south just offshore the wrecks of the Sea Emperor and United Caribbean. The stern rests on her port side while the remainder of the former coaster is twisted and mangled amidst some coral hardbottom habitat. Keen observers may also still see the pummeled remains of a 20‐foot long submersible resting amongst the Noula’s remains, which w a s found abandoned on a beach ‐ likely from a covert drug smuggling attempt ‐ in November 1988, salvaged by Kellerman Diving and Salvage Company, and sunk next to the Noula in late September 1989.
