On July 16, 1985, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Bomb and Arson Unit detonated four explosive charges that sent the freighter Rebel 110 feet to the bottom off Fort Lauderdale. The keel for the coastal freighter w a s originally laid down in 1940 as the Cornelis (IMO number 5080067) by C. Appelo's Scheepswerven at Zwartsluis, Netherlands. Due to the pending occupation of German forces in World War II, the vessel was dismantled and sunk near the yard before completion; the Cornelis was finally rebuilt in 1947. The coaster w a s 135.4 feet long, 23.6 feet wide, and displaced 288 tons. After four decades sailing throughout Europe for several owners, the Cornelis was sold to Inversionista Nova Aborai SA. of Panama in 1981and renamed Island Transporter. The following year, the freighter w a s renamed Sta Andrea after her sale to Cachontun SA. In 1984, the coaster was seized by the US. Coast guard for smuggling narcotics and docked on Miami River. After sitting idle for 10 months, the Sta Andrea was purchased at federal auction on June 12, 1985, for $17,500 by an anonymous Fort Lauderdale resident. The individual then donated the vessel, which was renamed Rebel, to Broward County for use as an artificial reef. Like the majority of coasters sunk as artificial reefs off Florida, the forward portion of the wreck, consisting of the cargo holds, has collapsed outward in the sand and the bow is found resting on its port side. The stern superstructure of the Rebel is still upright and intact, rising over 20 feet off the bottom.
