The coaster Sha Sha Boekanier (IMO number 5294412) was originally built in 1962 as the Richard Rahmann at the Neuenfelde, Germany shipyard of shipbuilder J.J. Sietas Schifiswerft. Documentation indicates the cargo vessel was 184.8 feet long, 31 feet wide, and 678 tons gross burden. In 1982, Richard Rahmann and Sons sold the freighter to F. Wadepuhl Kommanditgesellschaft of Ritterhude, Germany, who renamed her Richard I; later that same year, she was acquired by a Panamanian company and operated as Richard II ; in 1985 the cargo vessel returned to a string of German owners beginning with Friedrich K.H. Pahmeier, who renamed her Wega III, finally, in1997 the Honduran company Cory Transport purchased the coaster, which then sailed as Sha Sha Boekanier. In April 2001, during an anti‐narcotics sweep of vessels moored in the Miami River, US. Customs Service agents discovered approximately 100 pounds of cocaine hidden in the engine room of the Boekanier, which

was summarily seized and forfeited by her owners.

On February 17, 2002, the Sha Sha Boekanier became the first and southern‐most of four vessels sunk in 90 feet of water off Palm Beach at the Governor's River Walk Reef. The 2004‐2005 hurricane seasons significantly modified the Sha Sha Boekanier, flattening the cargo hold area and separating the bow and stem of the freighter, the latter of which rests adjacent to the bow of the St. Jacques The Governor’s River Walk Reef is a fantastically exciting dive, typically known for clear water and abundant and large marine life encounters, though bathed by strong currents. Experienced divers, however, can easily hide in the lee of the structure and use the northward-moving current to jump from wreck to wreck, following large rubble corridors in between the freighters Sha Sha Boekanier and Gilbert Sea.
