HISTORY

On December 15, 2002, the Thozina became the fourth vessel deployed at the Governor’s River Walk Reef off Palm Beach. The 174‐foot long freighter was scuttled in 90 feet of water just to the east of, but in between, the Sha Sha Boekanier and the Gilbert Sea, and a large pile of rubble w a s added just off the starboard bow of the wreck. All of the freighters sunk at this site have been significantly impacted by past hurricanes, which have collapsed the cargo holds and ripped apart the bow and stern sections. Nevertheless, the Thozina, along with the other freighters at the Governor’s River Walk Reef, provide a phenomenal diving experience. Divers can typically explore all four wrecks as they are carried north by the Gulf Stream, as well as observe the large resident marine life that frequent the area, which include Goliath grouper, sea turtles, rays, and sharks.

The 425-ton German coaster was originally launched by J.J Sietas Schifiswerft on September 18, 1957, as the Lisa Eichmann for J. Eichmann of Hamburg, Germany. The freighter was sold in 1961 and was renamed Nereus; starting in 1987, the vessel sailed through the Caribbean for Cavalier Lines, who named her Cavalier Star; traded to the related shipping company Arawak Lines in 1993, the freighter served as Arawak Star; Star Brothers Shipping Company SA. of Honduras purchased the vessel in 1995, who again named the coaster Cavalier Star; in 1998, the coaster w a s sold to Everline S.A. of Belize and renamed Sea Queen; sold in 2000 to Panamanian owners, the vessel was finally named Thozina. In July 2002, Palm Beach County acquired the Thozina from the US. Customs Service, which had seized the coastal freighter earlier that year with concealed narcotics onboard.
